Why don't you like Cream Legbars?

I find them over rated. Now I know I am not in the best area for high egg production. The extreme cold up here and the 3 hours of daylight 6 months a year, do cut into egg laying.

First off though lets get their names correct.

I know there are threads were people with no lives, (unlike me who's life revolves around BYC) they argue about the name of the bird. Some call it a "crested Cream Legbar" which drives other nuts. The call each other names and say you cannot possible own a "quality bird" if you do not even know its name. I forgo those petty arguments.

I call mine two names. I have females ( the ones that lay an egg every month or two, and I call them Creamettes.
The beautiful ones whose whole job is to be eye candy are called Creamers.

Now much like bovines are called cows, these chickens can be referred to as Creamettes when talking about both sexes. A bull is a cow a cow is never a bull... Did everyone follow that logic?



Anyways, back to my Creamettes.

They are a past flavor of the month chicken. One Greenfires imported to get rich on foolish gullible chicken people. I did not get mine directly from Greenfire though. I am WAaaaaaaay smarter than that.

I got mine through a divorce sale by someone who bought them from Greenfire. It was a divorce sale so it had to be a good deal. I am a sucker for divorce sales. I paid 150 bucks for a breeding trio. ( when the laughter dies down and you get the tears out of your eyes over my stupidity please continue reading).

I brought them home with visions of 14 Karat gold silverware, a new boat, a motorcycle and a truck with the profits from hatching these little birds. BTW a Creamette lays a "Diamond Encrusted Egg". This was the golden goose and I was not going to cut there heads off.

I fired up my incubators and waited patiently for eggs.

Now one of the problems with Creamettes is their nervousness. They stop laying for a month when something big happens in their lives. Moving them was a big deal, NO EGGS FOR A MONTH!. ( I did get 2 eggs the first day but only because they were in the egg track before the nervousness shut them down.)

Finally they started laying, I was getting 5 eggs a week from my two hens. They are real laying machines!

I spared no expense on them. I made a 8x16 ft coop for them. I put in nice nest boxes for them. I made an enclosed run/pen 60 ft long 10 ft wide and covered. I put a canvass over the far end of the run for them to stay out of the sun if they want. I put climbing rails and hiding areas in the run for them to play on and under. I put a feeder and waterer on the far end of the run in addition to the ones in the coop. still 5 eggs a week. I know they both were laying because somedays I go and find 2 eggs!


I loved to go and sit outside the run and watch my prize birds. You would think sitting a viewing prize birds would make them worth it. My family thought I had lost it. I would sit outside the run and hope for a glimpse of the little things. They run from hiding place to hiding place. They are fast. Those of us with them nickname them road runners. They are that fast.

They are not birds that like to be held. They do not even like to be looked at. They really have no value. The Diamond encrusted eggs are a nice shade of blue, but in all honesty I have buck and a quarter EE that lay eggs that are prettier, larger and they lay them everyday!

The EE follow me when I walk across my yard. The Creamettes run from me. The EE tolerate my holding them, petting them and whispering "pretty bird" in their ears. The Creamettes shat on me when I tried that.

I did not put all this in my Review of the creamettes as I figured the creamette owners would find me and break my legs, if they get upset over the name, just think what they would do to someone that thinks they are overpriced and over hyped?

A creamette, and even a creamer, is a small bird. They are worthless as a roaster because of their size. I doubt I could make more than 2 cans of Campbells type chicken noodle soup with the meat on their bones.



Oh another thing. If Creamette eggs have a hatch rate of 35% they are doing good. They have terrible hatch rates. I can put EE and Creamette eggs in the incubator together and get 70% on the EE and 30% on the Creamettes.


I am going to try and sell the whole flock this summer. I want the coop and run for breeding pens for more worthy birds. If I cannot sell them I will eat them, they should make a good appetizer.

I have a couple half breeds. , One of the hens got free for an hour or so last summer. (My mother was "showing them to a friend< and how was she to know they would run out and open coop door? (BTW I have a double door system on the coop. (my mother is old and more senile than me even).....

The Creamette used that hour to mate with my EE rooster. Which was not a hard feat, because that rooster RIP.... was a serial rapist. but he also had the blue egg gene.

So I have these couple half breeds.

Oh and I did not touch on the comb. The Creamers have huge beautiful combs! Single combs with an large over hang on the rear and 7 nice sharp points on them. They are beautiful! BUT in Minnesota they freeze faster than water! It is impossible to keep them from getting frostbite. They look like a pitiful cushion comb come spring.

There I hope that helps explain why I do not like them...

I could never be a used car salesman either. I am just too honest.....

Just be glad you got blue eggs! My three hens laid GREEN eggs. So I notified all the Legbar snobs that I was extremely p!ssed that my Legbars laid green eggs! They told me that "blue" was in the eye of the beholder. I said really? So I took a picture of a Legbar egg, an EE egg, a leghorn egg, and a marans egg. When I posted the picture with one each of green, blue, white, brown. And asked them to guess breed to egg color. They all of course told me the blue egg was the Legbar egg.
When I told them they were wrong, they told me there was no way the blue egg was from an EE!

And yes the debate on what to call them? Crested or not created? Who gives a shift?

Any way I am sorry yours were such crappy layers. And we're so unfriendly. Mine were friendly and laid, that was their saving grace. But the roosters were real b******s! Both of them made great chicken salad.

Oh and mine were free........ I would have been ballistic if I had paid for them.

This is the ONLY chick that I got to hatch and he was from a leghorn rooster bred to a Legbar hen.

Oh,, I think you are far enough south Creamettes might lay eggs. I think the climate up here is not good for them.


I never thought of a chicken salad, but it would work for them too.
