One of our chickens took a nip at my 5 year old's eye this morning. It wasn't her eyeball, just the soft skin right under the eye. It's not a puncture like peck/bite it looks more like a pinch with a little break in the skin. I cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and put some neosporin on it. Anything else I need to be doing?

I had that happen to me too. Right in the eye ..hurt like heck.

I have now taken to wearing safety glasses when I hold my girls. Just a thought.
They have nice ones now that are like regular glasses only plastic.

Yikes! I think you should always take caution when holding your birds, and I'm not saying that you weren't! Chickens peck fast, so try not to look them in the eye, or hold them too close to your face, try holding them closer to your hips.

Hope your little girl feels better!

Thanks for the words of caution. My daughter is usually pretty good with them, they have just started to lay eggs so I think they are maturing and changing and my daughter will have to accomodate that. She said she was just kneeling on the ground and the chicken (she's our most dominant and vocal) came and nipped at her. Funny enough, after the chicken nipped at her she vanished into a hiding spot. I think maybe my daughter wailing scared her but nonetheless she wouldn't come out and I was afraid I'd lost her to the neighborhood. But there she was, huddled under some bushes, clucking softly as I coaxed her out. Poor thing, if I didn't know better I'd think she felt real bad for what she did.

One of my Austras picked a contact out of my eye. Didn't hurt at all. She didn't eat it, I disinfected it and put it back in the next day. I keep a little more distance when holding them now.

When mine start to look at my face when I'm holding them I put my head closer and they back off or I pull my head back.
