We moved to an area last year in the Central Valley in California that would allow for a few backyard chickens so we got a Polish and Silkie hen. Carla and Sally respectively. Sally decided to crow so now it is Carla and Sal. :) Since we got them last fall we have acquired a hen of unknown origin that we found in a brush pile on the back of the property. She is older and super broody, she was so beat up that the kids called her the scab chicken. With some TLC, shelter, food and water she is looking much better these days. Now called Abby (Scabby Abby but she doesn't seem to mind!) She now sits on two ceramic eggs and will live out her days here with us. Our latest is a Sussex that took Abby's place in the long grass on the back lot and hatched out 10 beautiful chicks. We gathered them and they have their own coop. As much as I like to see them free the babies wouldn't stand much chance with all the raccoons, possums, coyotes and a beautiful huge owl that has been hanging about lately.
There is the long and short of our chicken journey to date. We bought two and now have fourteen!
