I am new to the raising of chickens. I have 6 4 week old Australorp's in a 110 gallon stock tank in my basement, and what a joy they are. I love all of the information I have learned from all of you on this site. I find myself coming back here almost daily for questions on the behavior of my little chicks. I look forward to learning and sharing with you all.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh you picked a WONDERFUL breed to start with!! Black Australorps were my first flock of chickens and they are STILL my most favorite breed of all! They are very docile, gentle, affectionate, great layers, just all around a great breed. My girls are huge on lap sitting! I can't sit anywhere without an Australorp wanting on my lap! You can train them early on to be lap sitters by getting them out of their brooder and on the living room floor or take them outside for field trips to a safe enclosure and sit down with them either outside or inside the house. They will naturally run to your lap and see it as a safe haven. Do this everyday and pretty soon you have a bunch of lap hounds!!

Enjoy your new babies!! Make sure to ask around in the forums if you have any questions about them. Welcome to our flock!

I am so glad you decided to join us. And congratulations on getting your own flock.

One thing I wish I had done when mine were still in the brooder was to put sunblock on my arms. Guess I spent way too many hours there and got some "sun damage" on my forearms and hands from the brooder lights

The fun and surprises will continue even after they are grown. Enjoy it all.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your BAs.
