A chicken's typical day?

A day in the life...

Rooster: Awaken to crow up the sun, herd the girls out into the daylight and start foraging. Crowing is imperative or the sun will just stop in its climb and the world will come to an end...so my crowing continues throughout the day. I will watch with great vigilance for hawks, find tastey bugs for my personal harem, train the 2 mo. olds to come when I call an alarm, and sow my wild, roostery oats all day. Eat a late supper, hit the choice spot on the roost, flanked by two hot young pullets with large breasts and sleep like a baby! Life is tough....

Hen: Stupid macho rooster starts screamin' in my ear while its still dark, I jump down from the roost to find something to throw at him....this is unsuccessful, as I have no opposing thumbs. :thun
I gossip with my girls a little, get out into the fresh air and start on finding some breakfast. Eventually get a cramp and run for the nest....some ol' biddy is usually on my favorite nest, so I cuss her til a fly won't light on her and wait impatiently with my little legs crossed.

Have a beautiful egg (much more beautiful than anyone else's) and announce it loudly to the yard...after all, its all about me!

Stroll leisurely throughout the orchard and yard, dust myself in the dog's favorite spot, drink out of their bucket just to annoy them and try to avoid the darn rooster's ridiculous advances. At the end of the day, I adjourn to the coop where that very large creature will finally feed us some quality food before we go to bed. Find just the perfect spot on the roost before any of the other broads can get it and hit snoooooze!

Mine hang out in their yards all day, and free range evenings and weekends. I have 2 21 week olds, and 6 6wk olds. The babies have their own mini-coop and mini-yard, and don't mix with the big girls yet. They all sleep, or at least laze around, a LOT. Even when the girls are out free ranging, they seem to spend a lot of time just lounging around. I never see them chowing like there's no tomorrow, but the food disappears, and their crop always feel ready to burst when I pick them up.

Oh, to be a chicken - or at least, one of MY chickens!

Beekissed -- that's the cutest description of a chicken's day! I love it!!

My five-weekers are still coop-bound, awaiting fencing that we're going to put in ASAP... it's a 2-level coop, though, and they sleep in the top level, then "forage" on the sunny lower level -- getting tasty weed seeds out of the hay -- until it gets too hot down there in the afternoon. Then they come back up to the top level, jump (and poop) on top of the feed bucket (which does have a lid, thank goodness), before eventually settling in to bed. They tend to sleep-talk in the middle of the night (or, maybe, grumble if someone moves), which worries me... it's like saying to all those night predators "YOO-HOO!!! OVER HERE!"

Silly girls.

Beekissed, that just made me laugh out loud! I don't *know* for sure what mine do all day since I'm at work, but I can only imagine it's eat, poop, eat, sleep, poop, eat, huddle together, eat, poop, sleep, eat, poop, and the girls make fun of the boys who are trying to be so macho.

Hey, that's just like middle school!!
