The first chick I wrote about is now 3 weeks old. That was from the first broody hen. The second broody hen hatched out one chick, without incident. the third broody hen, who was actually the first one to go broody, FINALLY hatched out her nest. She sat on the nest for at least 5 or 6 weeks. I actually had told my son to clean out the nest, because apparently nothing was going to happen. So the very day he went out to clear it out, there ware 3 babies! That was yesterday.
Today, the boy was out in the shed, supposed to be cleaning the walls and clearing out the old nests, for real this time. What does he find? Another egg, the shell totally shattered but for some reason, the membrane still intact. With a tiny beak protruding through a tiny air hole. Hubs and kiddo panicked and peeled the shell off the chick, then turned up the heat in the bathroom (where we keep the brooder) and left her alone. It took about an hour before she could stand up on her own, but now, about 12 hours later, she (or he) is standing up, walking, chirping, and eating. Kiddo brought in the other runt and now the of of them are getting along famously. The little one hides and cuddles under the not-as-little one. Meanwhile, the precotious wyndottes are moved out to the the juvenille pen in the shed.
