I have seen many posts lately asking when will my chicken lay or do I just have a dud?

So this is a thread for all you chicken keepers out there that fear you have a dud. A little fun and support as we all wait for the elusive egg laying to begin in earnest. Let's see whose dud chicken will lay first. Winner gets bragging rights. Maybe we can come up with some sort of prize, though getting that egg finally might be prize enough ;)

To join in, let us know your breed of chicken, hatch date/age, and anything else you want to introduce your situation. This is not a spot for medical advice for a hen that's stopped laying and may need serious help, please start a new thread for that. This is for all those free loading slacker chicks that should be mature and have yet to drop an egg in the nest box!

Let the games begin!

Okay, Ill play. We have two Lavender Orpingtons, Hedwig and Harlee. Purchased June 24th and told they were 7 weeks, so should be around 26 weeks now.

Then we have Iris, a 32 week Black Australorp, she laid 3 eggs in September then stopped. Nothing medically wrong with her. She's bossy with our other chickens and I think you only earn that right if you are producing.

I've got 4 out of 5 who are freeloaders, I will list from oldest to youngest. Hatch dates are based on what the seller told me, I did not hatch them myself, but all dates seamed reasonable with the size/feathering of the chicks when I got them. None of them squat. None of them have fully developed combs and wattles like my one that is laying. Our weather has turned to winter, the days are considerably shorter, and I fear I won't have eggs until spring! I was told they should be laying in July. I believed the farmer. These are my first chickens.

Dela the Delaware hatched Feb. 15 (now about 34 weeks, that's over 8 months old!) She hatched the same day as my one layer, though now her hatch-mate has been laying for about 3 weeks. I thought she would be next to lay as her comb and wattles are growing, but there is also an abundance of white feathers flying around and she is my only white pullet, so she may be beginning to molt, it's a crap shoot!

Harriett the Barnyard mix is probably a week younger maybe hatched around Feb. 21

Betty the Ameraucana hatched March 1 (now 8 months old!) I've heard this breed can be slow to mature/lay.

Dot the Gold Laced Wyandotte also hatched March 1, she has always been smallest and had a respiratory infection around 10 weeks, so I suspect she will be last to lay, maybe not even until spring.

Okay I'll play....and win! I've got Lulu aka Lucille a faverolles hatched April the 12th so that'd make her roughly 29 weeks old. She's healthy, happy absolutely lovely buuuut she's a dud.:barnie

And she totally looks like a grown up fluffy butted chicken with a red comb that should be laying your breakfast every day!

One of mine, I look at her, and she still looks like a baby compared to the others, but your Lucille has no excuses!

Ahh,Lucille looks grown up but she's still very baby minded. I actually think she might be "special". Which is perfectly fine with me.:)
