Helga, my pragmatic affable Cherry egger has been #1 since the seven left the brooder last spring. Her lieutenant, Scarlett a large Buff Orpington and a devoted second-in-command, and left to the perch organization and minor duties.
Two weeks ago, Scarlett, with the help of her fellow thug revolutionaries Dorothy and Rose, staged a coop coup d'état.
Left battered and dazed from a surprised attack, humbled and injured, Helga retreated to position number 7, followed by a quick demotion of her loyal supporter Jezebel. Licking their wounds, the deposed birds have spent their days now in low whispers in a corner of the yard. What no one realized...what no one suspected..they were not cowering in fear, nor leaving the public stage quietly.
They were plotting their revenge!
Lulu, a diminutive flighty Buff Orpington that no one in particular would notice and one might describe as a flibbertigibbet, let alone give the time of day to, has spent the two weeks secretively darting back and forth between the two groups. Clucking madly upon returning to the plotting Helga and recently.....taking the docile overweight and somewhat dim-witted June with her.
Scarlett, the new iron fisted Coop ruler had taken notice of the spy and began to woo Lulu back to her side of the yard with calling after scratching up things in the yard then walking away. The ploy seemed to be working.....until I noticed that Little Lulu would then call and Helga and Jezebel ...who would come running over.
Furious, the threatened Scarlett became even more of a tyrant and ruled over the landscape as so many despots had before. It was her yard, and her rules would be followed - or else. It was too much! The others felt the yoke of oppression deeply.
Soon, it was five standing behind Helga again as she marched across the yard. Her still healing battered neck feathers spiking into the wind. "No more" she clucked with authority, and began the verbal outpouring of the group's unhappiness. My wife says it was Helga that began the charge, I say it was Scarlett. What is known for certain, is that the battle for the yard had begun. It would be settled that day.
It was a cool windless morning yesterday and the remnants of the battle laid upon the shadowless ground. A testament to the victory of a just and kind ruler over those who would replace them with tyranny.
Helga is back to the top perch in the coop, her new lieutenant....Lulu by her side. Scarlett, alone against the wall at the other end of the perch.
