Hi guys I am looking at making a coop for our special school. We are getting 3 hens. I am a bit confused about what I should do. I know I need 4 square feet per chicken. I've seen a good shape that I like. So thats no prob. Do I need a run attached to the coop? If so how long does it need to be? How long should the chickens be left in the coop? Do they need to run free at some stage in the day?
Any of these questions answered would be wonderful

SARS - Where are you located? Their are many different opinions on how much space chickens need. You need to decide if they will ave a run before deciding on teh size of the coop. If they are not going to have a run, then I would think their coop needs to be at least 4 sq ft per bird. They don't need to free range, although, they would love it. I personally think they need a run just to get out and have a change of scenary. Yeah they are chikcnes, but they are pets also. I treat my chickens, geese, ducks like pets. My kids might tell you at times, I treat my animals better than the kids. The nice thing about pets, they don't talk back.
