A couple of questions

Do hens mate with other hens? The reason I ask is we have this hen (at least we think she is a hen) that was mounting one of our other hens last night. If she is a rooster, she doesn't crow and is the whimpiest thing I have ever seen. From day one she is scared of everything. The hens do not like her and will beat her up.

How old to roosters usually start to mate? We have 26 black star pullets that are 64 days old. (right now my brain isn't working to put it into weeks) and the free rare breed is already trying to mate with them and he is the same age as they are.

I thought I was starting to understand all of this chicken stuff but then they start throwing things at me and make me confused again. lol

Hens will sometimes climb on the back of other hens as a dominance gesture, usually when there is no roo present. Offhand I'd guess that is a roo, though.

I don't know what she is. We got her from a swap meet. The rest of our flock are 5 RIR's 1 of those is a rooster, 2 buff orpingtons, her, and another black one that we have no idea what breed she is either. She is all black with black legs with spots of hair down the front of them.

We got 26 black stars from mcmurray on Aug 23rd and one free rare breed. We are thinking it is a roo and an easter egger.
