My Coop
My Coop
I want to gather some opinions on an odd observation of mine. It's about my chickens' outdoor waterer. They have an open waterer in the run, and a nipple waterer in the coop. Their feed is in the coop (no feeders outside). The outdoor waterer is about 10 feet from the coop, and the run is covered. So, here's the mystery... Every morning before I let the chickens out, I rinse the outdoor waterer and fill it with fresh water (ice water now that it's hot). I let them out, hang out with them for a while, and leave. I return in the afternoon to check on them and give their water more ice. And every single time there's a sediment of feed at the bottom of the outdoor waterer! My run bedding is yard waste (mostly grass clippings and dry leaves), so nothing resembling that sediment. The feeder is 10+ feet away. How in the world do they get feed in there?!? They have dry crumbles in the coop, so not like something stuck to their beaks that gets washed into the waterer. I know that they don't have sphincters in their esophagus, so gravity brings things down when they lower their head, but I thought that only applied to water and other runny substances, not dry feed. Is their feed just rolling out of their crops and spilling down through their open mouths? That's the only explanation I can think of, and it honestly sounds a bit ridiculous... What do you guys think? Do you find unexplained feed in your waterers, too?

How high up is your waterer? Maybe they get their feet in there....

They sometimes step or perch on the edge, but I haven’t seen them step inside it in the water. Even if they did, it wouldn’t explain the feed... Their coop and run are roofed and dry, and their feet are dry... the feed is dry... nothing sticks to anything 🤔

I loooove that waterer!

Mine are still bumbling teenagers so they step all over their waterer and food. I wonder if they'll become more graceful when they grow up.

Thanks! It’s a planter that I turned into a waterer, because it looks so nice, and chicken gear is ugly

Mine are teenagers, too - 12 weeks - but don’t like getting their feet wet for some reason. And their feeder is suspended from the ceiling pretty high, so they can’t step in it.

Mystery solved! It was one single chicken that was doing it - the Red Partridge Orpington cockerel (red and black one in the photo). He was all kinds of special  and I guess a very messy drinker, too. I'd noticed that he liked playing with the water a lot. Acting like he was trying to bite it, instead of drinking it (he also drank just fine the normal way when he was actually thirsty, but also liked to just mess around with the water a lot). So all that biting and dunking of his beak and face in the water, combined with chicken anatomy (lack of a sphincter in the crop and food spilling out), resulted in the water getting incredibly mucky. When I'd go to clean it out at the end of the day, it was like a slurry of feed and water!

The mystery got resolved when one day the cockerel grew up and started crowing, and I had to rehome him. Ever since he's been gone (two weeks now), the water has been CRYSTAL CLEAR!!! The remaining 5 girls are just careful drinkers, I guess. The difference in water quality has been shocking. I'm not entirely surprised though - whenever there was some kind of trouble or mischief, it was always him  So yeah... Mystery solved!
