A delicate question about male dogs

I hadn't had a male dog before I rescued my pointer. He was about 8 months old at the time. When I picked him up from his neuter op, I was a little surprised. Apparently they leave 'pockets', and in something as shorthaired as a GSP it looked a little strange. The 'pouches' do shrink with time though.

Neutering early, before they hit sexual maturity GREATLY reduces the size of the scrotum left behind.

I did my own pet Lab at exactly 6 months and there is barely anything left. He's 8 years old now.
I also did an adult tom cat who had large testicles and he still walks around looking like he's got a pair in there!

It will shrink but only so much. If the thought of a change purse sized piece of skin hanging off your dog for the rest of it's life bothers you, best to do it early!

I waiteded a year before I got my dog neutered. He did have a large coin purse as my mother but it, but he is 3 and a half now and it is gone now.

If both of his family jewels are there, regardless how small, you are fine. At that age, both should drop.

We had a Collie that had one undescended testes and he was automatically neutered when we got him because it is a trait you do not want to pass down to offsprings. I say anywhere between 8 to 10 weeks should give you a good example if his testes should be in their pockets.

I love the phase "coin purses", and agree that the sooner you get them neutered the better they will be, all smooth and probably not a wrinkle!

It is embarassing but who would be more embarassed, the dog show judge or you????? I know judges are used to it and show dog folks are not bothered by it.

Sometimes it is a good idea to examine your dog in case you want him intact for possible cancers. Once you get the hang of it, it benefits both of you in health and costs wise. Heck we do our own exams or you do each others, because we care! Don't forget to do it, ladies and gentlemen! I believe this month is for the Cancer Society!

Jax won't be neutered. He is (technically) DH's dog and it's DH's decision.

I'm getting a pup, same breeder, around Christmas time. Haven't totally decided on a male or female yet.

I'm just glad to know Jax's buddies are okay. Thanks y'all.

OK. DHs can be REALLY funny about having their male dogs neutered.

To get mine to consent so I could neuter his 6 yr old dog I had to buy him (the dog, or I guess my DH really) NEUTICLES. Yes, doggy falsies. Fake testicles. Little buddy manikins.

The vet and the staff all laughed at me. All my friends had to feel them after he was back in class. Ever seen a group of little old obedience women feeling up a dog?
