A different way to water chickens-Avian Aqua Miser

yummo,
That's good to know about the gravity nipples. Good of you to take the trouble to confirm that. If you do get some of these, and build a waterer, please let us know how it works. I plan on a larger coop and run in the spring, and I'd like to make another, but slightly modified. So far we're very pleased with ours, but always on the look-out for other ideas. One of these days, I have got to quit building stuff for the chickens!!!!!

I agree, nipple waterers are the bomb but I have ducks with my bantams and ducks need to dip their faces in water so no nipples in that coop. I didn't have luck on keeping the nipples unfrozen last winter so has anybody had any luck keeping these babies going in winter. I like the simplicity of a buckect and ease of cleaning also, don't like the idea of using pipes w/o using chlorine in the water, kinda difficult cleaning all those pipes.

I haven't read this entire post, but I AM planning on getting these nipple watering gizmos because I have a SERIOUS mosquito problem here, and a closed watering system would certainly take care of that!

I'm glad to see so many folks have used them successfully. Gotta love BYC!

Hello spud1035
I am new to the forum and right now my automatic watering system is my kids

. In my research I came a crossed something that may help you with freezing water. Page 36 on Klubertanz Equipment Co., Inc. http://www.klubertanz.com/images/Klubertanz_AutoWater32-36.pdf has High Wattage Cables that go inside of the pipes. I don’t know how well it works but it is an idea. Has anyone used a fish tank heater or bucket heater inside a bucket with watering nipple on the bottom to keep the nipples from freezing up?

This was our first winter with chickens. We started using the nipples in buckets last fall. When we had a cold snap in Nov. and the nipples were immobilized quite easily by the frozen water around them, we just started using a heated dog dish and have been using it ever since. Surprisingly, the chickens haven't messed it up as much as I thought they would. I do look forward to going back to the buckets for the warmer months, though! They are wonderful!

If I put a fifty gallon rubbermaid trash can as the water holding tank and mount it to where it gravity flows to the nipples through PVC Pipe will this work ok? Also, will I have to change the water out regularly or can I keep it in there until it runs out and then fill it back up again?

Yes the 55 gallon drum will work as a storage tank. Just don't add any more height to the water column than you have to. Set it up so that the discharge pipe or tube from the storage container is not less than 6" above the highest point the nipple will ever be at. If feasible it would be better to lay the drum on its side so that you can gain water capacity without increasing height. I would suggest that you use a 1/4" plastic tubing to go from the storage tank to the end of the PVC pipe where the nipples are to be installed. Much simpler, fewer, less expensive parts.
Water age (quality)? If the water does not become contaminated with other stuff (dirt, dust, debris) it will maintain quality for a long time.
