The neighbors box terrier got my duck Wilson. She found him hiding under her porch. I was able to calmly pick him up (this has neverrr happened before) and noticed he has 3 puncture wounds and is missing his feathers/skin under his wings.
He was covered in mud and we were able to sit him in the bathtub for a while. I made sure the water was warm to avoid shock and that it was clean so he could drink. We cleaned his wounds and as much of the mud as we could with warm water, then rinsed him again once he was as clean as we could get him. I could not use soap because he was drinking the water the whole time which I believe is a good sign. He was despondent and let me hold him in a towel to dry off with his head over my shoulder. I was thrilled when we put him in a box and he tried to attack me! I know he's scared. but at least he has some fight in him.
I am lucky enough that I can bring him to work with me. I have him in a big box with paper towels and old sheets to keep him dry and warm. I am giving him .5 ml of Enrofoxacin (Baytril) in his drinking water, mixed with some dried meal worms so that he will be tempted to drink it.
He is still very "raw" looking and make horrible "honk breaths" when I get too close. Like an angry bull.
Is there anything else I can do for him right now? He's about 8lbs, I don't know if my dosage for the Baytril is correct but given how long he was under the neighbor's porch I don't want to risk giving him the runs and dehydrating him. I keep getting different dosage rates on the internet. I don't know the concentration so it's hard to see how many ml I can give him if it's 5mg/kg and he's about 4 kg?
I also read not to use rubbing alcohol, ointment, or peroxide on the wounds. Because of the mud I am highly concerned about infection.
He is also missing ALL his back feather where his oil gland is. He is unable to "oil" himself. Should I wait until these feathers come back to let him near water? He's certainly already less boyant in the bathtub!
Thank you guys so much!
