A Dummies Guide to Shipping Birds

Everyone that ships birds is NPIP?

Yes, either that or they are criminals.

Yep

And also, when you get NPIP certified, you can't buy birds from anyone who isn't NPIP certified, or it will void your certification if someone finds out. Depending on your state and the certain rules, I think I'n heard that you may be able to buy birds but keep them quaranteened far away from your certified flock and get them tested too, but you would need to contact who comes to test your birds before you buy and see.

That is all correct as for shipping rules, NPIP ans A.I testing and all. They have to go Express mail, if your postal people Know the regulations, they are required to be guaranteed overnight delivery or they are not supposed to except them into the system if the birds are more than 1 day old. Day olds can go priority mail, but I always use Express on them, a 2-4 day Priority trip always ends up in dead or weak chicks on the receiving end with Priority.
A sliced apple or some lettuce is always appreciated by the birds. It is best to ship in the 40-70 degree range on both ends, after it hits 85 degrees, they are not supposed to accept them then either. I say supposed to on all this because many p.o. workers dont know the rules so they take them anyway, but over night and under 85 degrees are the main rules, that and they have to go out in bio secure box, Horizon is the biggest brand in these. They vary in size and cost. $20-$40 is average

I can't remember the last time a box of birds I shipped made it in 24 hours......they are traveling for 2-3 days now

it all depends on where you are, most of mine do, there are a few that done, they always get second day even from GA to Alaska, never had an express box take 3 days, that'd be awful.

I got mine from Pips&Peeps from WA to TN in 14 hours it all depends on where you are.CityGirl and I are real close to the main po center for our entire area and just minutes from the Intl. Airport that all express mail flies in and out of.My chicks touched down at the airport and a half hour later sitting in my PO..service well paid for

Not sure about Rutherford but Wilson testing was real quick so even if you find a non NPIP bird like Blue Jeans I had them tested in about 2 days.
Oh,not sure if it was your pullet or my other black gal-they kind of look alike sitting in the nest box but one is laying a darker green than I would have hoped for but very pretty...good green color not olive or drab. Hopefully though since it was just the first egg they will lighten up a bit-who knows how long she was keeping it in there!

I wanted to add that a lot of people told me I did not need to be certified. I thought for a long time that it was optional. I have since learned otherwise and am working on becoming certified.

yep, in most cases, I know for sure here in GA, if you only sell in your home state you dont have to be. BUT, if you ship out of state in all cases, you must be NPIP certified to do it by law. Also, about 1/4 of the states are now requiring birds that enter their state to also come from an Avian Inflenza (A.I.) tested and certified farm as well, so we got both. In most cases, it's not really inforced, but be prepared for them to start cracking down on it in the near future.

our birds ship from the Louisville airport about 45 min. away. They were blaming the delay in shipping on the dry ice from the flu shots. Hopefully they pick back up with good service.
