A lost chicken made her way into my backyard and we've become fast friends. I've been feeding her well and she seems very happy. She roosts in our giant grapefruit tree and come and gets me when she's hungry. Id love to keep her -even benefit from some eggs as some point. I don't see evidence of eggs anywhere and I'm pretty cluless about how to care for her .Suggestions are so very welcome.

Hello Carol, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Can you post pictures of her?
Get a back of All Flock, Flock Raiser or chick starter crumbles to feed her to start with.
To keep her safe and secure you will eventually need a coop that offers 3.5-4 sq ft per chicken then get her a friend. Once they bond, get 2 more and integrate them. Chickens do not do well as solitary animals. They are flock creatures.

It sounds like she has adopted you!
A coop would be the safest place for her, long-term. Kept in a coop/run, she will need a good pellet or crumble feed, access to oyster shells (for calcium and egg-laying), grit, and of course water. Treats should only be 10% of her diet, and that includes scratch grains.

I did most of my research on BYC for coop safety and predator prevention tips. BYC is a great learning resource, and there are plenty of helpful folks ready to answer your questions!
