A Few Dumb Duck Questions

Its funny that you said that about the oil glands...the guy that I bought my muscovy's from said the same thing. I just looked a him weird and thought...whatever. When I got them home and they jumped into the pond, their feathers got soaked. I attributed it to the fact that they had no water source where they were from other then for drinking. This leads to inapproppriate distribution of natural oils. This is also why they were REALLY stinky when I got them.

I know you don't have to have a pond source for scovy's, but my girls LOVE their pond!!! They are in it most of the day.

In San Diego sure !! But not where its all frozen up and no sun.

My muscovies have access to a rubber dish - its big enough to hold two of them if they squeeze in

I have also seen the girls jumping into the horse water tank

(which has a de-icer)

I had a frozen duck last year - from being wet to the skin, I had to bring him into the house and give him a dip in the bath (cool) to thaw out the feathers, then dried him off with a towel and put him back outside. This year I haven't had that happen, I think their feathers are alot more oily this year. They all still look a little dirty this time of year, with muddy melting snow and freezing temps - there isn't much time to bath!

I think mine all went through a molt this year, I only noticed one girl lost alot of feathers, the others I didn't notice much at all - but there were feathers all over the yard!

Well now...frozen duckie is never a good thing!!! I stand corrected...pond source is good as long as your duck will not become a ducksicle!!!

They tend to be clanish (you should hear what they have to say about this board and the people who post here)

You mean like this?

Backyard Chickens is a little different, it is more about feelings for poultry rather than poultry facts. You can get some good information at BYC but you can often hear myths repeated over and over again until you start to beleive they are facts

Oh wait GD-that was you on another forum.
