Hi all,
We are first time chicken owners. We got 12 birds the beginning of June, 2 Blk Jersey Giants, 2 Chanteclears, 2 Wynndotts, 2 White Laced Cochins, 1 Golden Laced Cochin and 1 Barnvelder, @ 8 weeks old. And 2 Ameriucanas @ 4 weeks old.
We expected the older birds to begin laying early Sept and we haven't seen a thing. Turns out 1 of the White Laced Cochins is a rooster. We've kept him with the hens this whole time. He has started trying to mate with them we think, jumping on their backs etc....
It's now early Oct and we live at 7600 ft. Last night it went below freezing...
What can we do to have them lay this winter? Or will they at all? Will the Rooster prevent them in any way? Should we remove him from the coop for the winter? Any and all info is appreciated! Thank you in advance
