For those of you who raise fowl and wish to "turn them loose" Let me suggest the American Gamecock as a choice for your flock protector and provider. I have leghorn and RIR hens that I free range for eggs and the gamecock is both gentleman and warrior. He will lay down his life protecting his flock, and is constantly ALERT. I allow mine to grow their spurs to better protect themselves and their ladies. He will often call and allow the hens to eat before he does. I have seen them put coons, snakes, hawks, dogs and feral cats on the run! They are extremely intelligent, often herding the hens toward my dogs or myself when danger is near. They are great fathers, and will often call and feed the chicks. I have witnessed gamecocks raise chicks when the mother has died. THEY WILL NOT TOLERATE ROOSTERS AFTER THEY REACH ABOUT 4-6 MONTHS of AGE! But will provide and protect them until then.Anyone who owns and loves poultry owes it to themselves to own one of these birds. Their courage and beauty cannot be matched.
