A full grown roo with batnams? hellllpppp

I've always had bantams around along with my standard size hens, but I do keep them penned separate when they are not free ranging. I love the little boogers, they are cute, feisty, great mothers and really good layers. I use the eggs to feed the dogs and back to the chickens.

I have Old English bantams but they are not the best layers. So I got a few standard hens for eggs. They are penned seperate but I keep a bantam roo with the standards. He might be small but he's big on attitude.

Agree with you on the Sebrights.. always liked their looks too.

I have 1 bantams hen, 4 roosters (Ameraucana, Silkie, 2 Orpington roosters), 3 ducks and 15 hens. They all get along pretty well. I have seen the alpha rooster (orpington) mate with little bantam and she's ok. She gives me an egg every morning. I would definately get more bantams in the spring

I have bantams (various breeds) and I wouldn't let a standard roo mate them, bantams are really small compared to a standard rooster (especially Sebrights, they're tiny). Even a gentle roo could hurt a bantam just due to the size difference. Some haven't had this happen, but some have and I wouldn't want to risk it.

Agreed, I would not let my big ol' roo mate with bantams. I'd be surprised if he DIDN'T hurt them, and he is gentlemanly.

Any time an 8-12 pound rooster mates a 1-3 pound hen there is the potential for serious injury. Just common sense, folks. Yes, you can get away with it; but also, you can end up with crippled, torn, or dead hens.
