Hello experts,
Do peas ever just gape, without it being a symptom of something?
Is gaping a symptom of anything except for gapeworm?
I was surprised to see three of the peas gaping (no other symptoms) this morning and wonder about the possible reasons.
If I see it again, I'll think about worming...tricky with the free rangers.
Is there any kind of wormer you can put into blueberries (their favorite food)?
Thank you in advance!

Are they still doing it? If it is not hot where you are then they shouldn't. Can be that something is caught in the throat, gape worms or start of respiratory disease. Look down the throats to see if there is anything stuck there. Ivemectn pour on for cattle works best for gape worms. Use a needleless syringe and squirt 1cc on the skin at the base of the neck or 1/2cc injected into a grape will do the trick.. I use baytril for respiratory illness at 3cc injected at the base of the neck just under the skin. I do not use Tylan 200 so I do not know what the dosage is. Deerman only told me to use baytril when my bird was sick. Again thanks Deerman for all your information - you are missed!

Thank you for the advice Yoda!
What is "hot" for a peacock? It's about 90 here.
Does heat make them gape?
I don't think I've seen that even when it gets around 100...when it gets very hot here, they seem to pant.

Some people will call the panting - gasping for air that is why I asked if it is hot in your area

Someone stated in an email to me that it was so hot his birds were gasping for air

Thank you so much for the responses.
I have seen the gang all day and they are definitely panting, it is quite hot here (poor guys), but I haven't seen them gaping since this morning.
There is a clear difference between their panting (beak slightly open and throat moving) and what I saw this morning (beak wide open and stretching the neck).

I don't know what that means, but it very well may have just been the heat.
I'll just keep an eye on them, wait until the weather cools a bit and see if they seem OK.

Just trying to help and cover all the bases. If they are free ranging they might have had grass or something stuck in the throat. My bird actually had this problem and you could hear the poor thing "gasping" for air. You could hear her "rattle" everytime she breathed in. I was told years ago "gape" was a yawn or opening of the mouth like a sparrow does when it is hungary. Mine never stood with it's neck out and held it's mouth open, so I learned something new today.

Oh, of course! I just saw the OP had written that the heat makes them pant, so I figured he knew the difference between the two actions, just not if heat could cause both :)
