URGENT Rooster with CRD or Gapeworms?

Do you notice a bad odor from your rooster’s beak? That white to yellowish material attached to his comb may be canker (trichmoniasis,) a protozoan infection spread by pigeons and wild birds. Or it could be a fungal/yeast infection. Canker stinks, but a yeast infection may not. Canker can be treated with certain drugs, such as metronidazole, ronidazole, acidified copper sulfate, or possibly with Thyme extract capsules. Fungal yeast infection may be treated with anti-fungal medicines such as Nystatin or Medistatin. Here is an article on canker:

If possible, I would see a vet and ask about having them do a scraping of the material and looking at it under a microscope.

I don’t really know to be honest. I don’t think worse but not really better either. I fear if he doesn’t start eating or drinking, it will be a sad ending.
I am glad that it has not got worse and he is fighting it. If he continues not eat and drink, then it is not a good sign. Might be give him some of those poultry multivitamin supplement drink to give him energy to fight on in this condition. Over here we got Vetsense Avi-Vita, I give it to my sick chickens whenever they are sick and not eat much. The expert here will help you.
I hope he will pull through. If worse comes is there a vet near by?

I don’t notice a smell to it. I feel more confused now than I did at the start of this. Oh gosh. I’m just not sure what to do. I live in rural Indiana so the nearest vet for a chicken is over an hour away.

@Eggcessive @SkyAJK I have a good update!! I went to petsmart today and picked up API general cure metronidazole. I administered to him 250mg and he’s already perking up, drinking lots of water and pecking at some eggs and feed, and walking around a lot. He hasn’t been opening his mouth and gargling anymore! I plan on following this for 5 days. Is he safe to go back with the rest of the flock after treatment? Is there something I need to be giving them before hand? Thank you for all of your help, advice & concerns for my Roo. I’m so thankful!! 🥹

I am so happy for you and your baby roo. All is well again.:thumbsup
I learn something along with you too about cracker & treatments.

Canker does usually have a bad odor. Glad that he is perking up. Acidified copper sulfate which is around $8 online, is used in the water to prevent canker in the other chickens. Dosage is 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for 3 days. Here is one place to get it:

I did notice a slight smell when I was giving it to him so it very well could be.

update: we lost him today. I came into the barn and found him this morning. Last night I noticed he was a little weak and hadn’t ate in a day. I just chalked it up as him still fighting it. I’m really sad and have to accept that I know I did what I could. He’s my first chicken I’ve lost in the year we’ve had them and he’s my first hatched baby. I appreciate all of your help and guidance regardless. 💜😭
