I purchased this 2 year old serama rooster this fall. Now he has blood coming out of his mouth when he sneezes and they are very big dramatic sneezes. (The vet was here on Monday to proscribed medication to all the birds that have respiratory problems) he’s awesome i dont want to give up on him. is there something i can do to help him??? Please help

(Edit: since I separate him should i give him food and water?)

Bloody mucus from the beak can be a sign of a bad virus called ILT. It can also cause gasping and arching the neck when sneezing and coughing, head shaking and slinging blood around. There is no treatment, and it is contagious. Have you added any new birds or could he have been exposed somehow?

I never add sick birds to my flock, when I bought some sick ones they were in a different area while I meditated them but that was way before i got him. Should i cull him immediately..:(

Everything you mentioned seems like him

You can bring home a chicken that looks perfectly normal, but could have been exposed to a sick bird and be a carrier. That is why most people quarantine new birds for up to a month to watch for any symptoms. Symptoms of ILT may occur 1-2 weeks after exposure. How long since you got a new bird? Do you have wild birds visiting feeders? Are there any pictures of the blood from the beak? Is he separated from the others? I would wash hands and change clothes and shoes between him and your others. If you should lose him, I would have your state vet lab do a necropsy and testing where you could get some answers. Here is some reading about ILT:

Is he able to eat and drink? I would offer food and water. Here is another good link to read:

If you need to get a diagnosis if he dies, here is a list of state vets to contact:

Im Canadian and I already have a amazing vet for my birds. He has eaten and i gave him water, ill do my best to take a picture of the blood, and i did separate him from the others!
