A Hawk! (And My Well Built Coop)

Laurajean, your girls are lucky to have such a wonderful, SAFE coop! When you mentioned the rock in your soil, I thought "sounds like New Hampshire", then I checked your location and sure enough! I'm in NH, too - those chunks of granite always pop up in the wrong places, don't they?

No worries, ha ha. I do that a lot too. I considered trying to convert my shed to a coop, but I bought the shed new, and really needed a shed BAD, so I wasn't willing to part with it to convert it. I needed the storage more. Not sure if you were referring to the coop door or the run door when you said you wanted it full size, but either way is helpful. I deliberately made my run door extra wide in case I needed to maneuver a wheel barrow in or something, and I'm glad I did. Makes shoveling snow around that area easier too.

My whole yard is ledge. My house is raised up, and has a lot of old rock walls on the property, which I love, but the ledge under the ground is everywhere and I hate it. Have to make raised garden beds, etc. because I can't dig anywhere. I even had a hard time last year when I went to bury my Guinea Pig.

And that's just a little hole, so I didn't even attempt trying to dig a trench for the hardware cloth.
