Hello New Friends!

First off, a little bit about us.

My wife and I having taken the plunge into raising backyard ducks in an agricultural, but still neighborhood environment. We're both from the midwest and have grown up around animals our whole lives. We currently have 6 Muscovy ducks, an adult pair, 3 "teenagers" and one duckling. We just placed an order for 11 ducks from Metzer Farms that will arrive on July 11th. We ordered 3 Cayuga ducks, 7 Welsh Harlequin females, and 1 Welsh Harlequin male.

We intend to let one of the females brood to help with the conservation of this breed. We know that our Muscovies don't make a sound, but how are WH and Cayuga ducks?

We have a very large yard, but have a huge dirt area on the side of our house that leads to a shed. We have fenced off that part of the yard, and the ducks sleep in the shed at night.

Our main goal is egg production for eating, and the occasional table duck. I'm working on installing a timed lighting system to help with this.

We also run an in-home animal rescue, and are at an all-time low with only our own 2 mini dachshunds, and 3 parrots. This has given us more time to work on projects like the ducks.
We've gotten a ton of our information from BYC, and figured it was time to actually sign up and help contribute. :)

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. I don't have Welsh Harlequins or Cayugas, but if they're anything like our Khaki Campbells, Runners, Pekins, etc then the girls can be quite loud.
Good luck with all of your birds

. I love your avatar! As for ducks Cayugas and Welshies are fairly calm in duck terns. The females are loud but not as much as other breeds. There is a Welsh Harlequin thread in the duck sections for breeders. If your serious about helping with conservation you should start there.

Wow, thanks guys for all the warm welcomes!

@Kevin - I will definitely head over and check out the thread on WH, thank you for pointing it out as this website is huge!

To others, thank you, and the birds in the avatar are our female Solomon Island Eclectus, Rosie, and our Sun Conure, Mango.

Just as a little extra my wife wanted me to ad: I'm no longer licensed due to moving to human healthcare, but I have 7 years experience as an exotic veterinarian (mostly avian) and can help answer some questions if people have them.

Thanks again everyone!
