I just recently bought four Barred Rock hens. I'm looking forward to watching them, taking care of them, and collecting eggs! I plan to buy a rooster next spring so I can get some chicks to either sell or raise to eat.

My chicken yard is on the side of my house and is about 20x30ft. I've had to put bird netting over it as a temporary solution to get them to stop hopping the fence. They're safe in the yard, but out of it my dogs or roaming animals can get to them!
We haven't built an official coop for them yet, but we've thrown together some pallets and strapped a tarp over it for weather protection. Last night though, it rained and they refused to go in where it was bone dry and got soaked... Why do they do this?

I'm also curious, and can't find the answer, why do chickens go dumb at night?

hmm, chickens have lower ability to see at night than at noon.
