I work at a veterinary centre and we a have an poorly orphaned lamb that needs a bit of TLC. Any idea if i can keep him at home with the hens (i only have 4) while he builds up some strength. We are too busy at the vets to give all our attention to one lamb i the back garden run. But i figured if i take it home i can keep a closer eye on him and feed him more often.

Will this idea work?

Cheers, Nicole Mac

Yeah it will wok fine...actually he'll feel better as he'll see the chickens as his heard and have company... and chickens are not afraid of sheep or cows or goats.... but some make good friends.... and they are very happy around them and peck around them from their food etc... and it won't take more than two days for the sheep and chickens to acclimate... we had some sheep before and chickens hanged aroung with them and the sheep would run and play with them.... and we now people that have cow and horses and their chickens would jump over them... and try to find some of their food on the floor... mine do that too... so yeah it's easy and interesting to watch....

It's good to know they won't mind each other! I'm worried about diseases, can they spread between the two?
Also, my run isn't very large, will a lamb get stressed in just 5m x 5m run, not that he is moving around very much?
And finally, will he be okay without something to graze? Because the chickens turned the run into a mud pile, i'm using sand for drainage which has worked very well. Its nice and dry but has no grass to munch.
I can get a big pile of veggies and salads from the shop, will it be enough?

If he is weaned that will be good to get him all the food he needs..... and he'll do fine in five by fine.... but as he grow bigger you should consider rehoming him as he won't be any use to you and he'll need more space..... and his heard of females if he's a boy and if it's a girl she will produce good milk and will be facinating.... you should keep in mind all the options available for his and your best... best luck....
