When I was a kid I would get 2 dyed chicks for Easter. Of which one would die and the other...well after a weekend at grandma's mid summer, I would come home to a fried chicken dinner and my chicken was gone! I'd cry and mom would tell me she bought chicken, mixed it all up so I wouldn't know who I was eating. That was good enough for me as I love fried chicken. Now that I'm retired I got MY chickens about a year ago starting with 6 Rhode Island Reds. After I got home from tractor supply I looked on line (most likely at backyardchickens.com) and saw that female RIRs had a distinctive mark on their heads. So I had bought 4 roosters and 2 hens. Immediately went back and got 2 more females. Once the coop was finished and they moved out of my 2 person bathtub I started culling the Roos. Now I'm down to 1 roo and 4 hens. We all live happily on the nature coast in Florida where they free range during the day on their fenced 5 acre spread and spend nights in their compound locked up in the coop. And that's how it started.
