I have an egg that pipped and you can see his little beak. He’s starting to break off more of the shell, and when he broke through some membrane, I saw a little blood forming. Is that normal? He’s peeping pretty consistently, I just don’t know if that’s normal. It’s been about 24 hours since he’s pipped. Please let me know if I should be worried, or if this is completely fine. I have not tried to help him at all. Thanks!!

He is malpositioned meaning he pipped at the wrong end of the egg. Not in the big end with the air cell.

Normally a chick will internally pip into the air cell in the fat end first, rest and absorb its yolk for around 24 hours before externally pipping the shell.

Because of the malposition, your chick externally pipped so it will take longer to hatch. While pipping, he hit a blood vessel which is common. As long as hes still peeping hes alive.

Hes still absorbing yolk so dont rush it. It will take longer.

I would give it another 24 hours before trying to help. Watch for yawning and nibbling beak movements. This indicates still absorbing yolk. When he stops doing this, you may want to assist if this is your plan.
