Good for you!!! That's not something to be embarrassed about. That's responsible husbandry for defenseless dependent animals. All the time, materials and effort you put into a secure environment now will pay off with healthy safe chickens and real peace of mind for years and years to come.
I remember the first night I had chickens and heard a pack of coyotes howling within a few yards of my suburban house. I was too afraid to go outside and deal with them directly but I couldn't sleep waiting for morning to find out if my coop and run could withstand them. Now I sleep like a baby regardless of what goes on out there. Earthquake and fire are things beyond my preparedness but I feel like I've got everything else in hand and it's an ENORMOUS relief 24/7.
