went out to check on my 10 day old quail tonight to see how they were doing in the out side brooder. when i noticed one of my A&Ms was standing off by him self in the coner of the brooder. i noticed he was standing on one foot and the other one looked twisted and kind of purple. i brought him in the house so i could see in the better light and one leg is broke right above the foot. i dont know if it can be fixed or if i should just cull him. what do you think?

I think that depends on how much money you want to spend. Vets can put the leg back in place and put like a small cast on it. I had a love bird that broke his leg, the vet was awsome and the leg healed right up as good as new. Buttercup was in the cast for 10 days then his leg was weak for about 3 days then he was hopping around like usual

The down side is it cost money, and if this isn't a pet or a bird that you can afford the money to put into it I would just say cull it.

I would be checking around to see what caused this and see if you can prevent it from happening again.

Yes you can fix it, and for free at home. Ive splinted two birds now!

They heal well and fast. Wait no three birds counting a chicken. Dont need a vet. Just need to set the birds leg straight....put a q-tip or even a stick as a splint aside the leg and tape the splint to the leg securely but not so tight it cuts of circulationa nd put it back in the pen and leave it alone for several days.

You are so much braver than me, Niki lol

I would be so afraid of making it worse. He said that it's right above the foot, can you splint that? You will have to give a video demo. so I can see how this is done

. I would love to know how to do this and do it right. If I just tried this on my own the foot would probably heal backwards lol.

LOL i actually learned because my puppy (now a dog) broke her leg at around 12 weeks old it took 3 months to heal but all hte vets did was put a splint on it and showed me how and it was disgustingly simple. The worst that can happen is a slightly lumped up area where the bone fuses back together. They can still walk on it. I will deffiantly do a demo someday but my hubby would have to help me cuz i need almost three hands to put the splint on and one to film

thanks. i went ahead and culled it. it was broke right in the ankle area. and it wasent eating or drinking. but on a good note my cow had her calf today a little heifer calf. she droped it about a hour ago. got pics if you wanna see them.

I had my daughter's goat break its leg in a wood pile it was playing on. Snapped like a stick. I made a lite weight splint out of wood and duck tapped it on. It healed great.

Next time you have a quail with a broken leg just know that it can be fixed

as long as it's not the thigh area (which would be hard to splint and allow the bird to still walk) it's possible even at the ankle.

adorable calf!
