Hatching
Just dropping by to introduce myself & the flock. Long time lurker, figured I'd sign up and slap a name on. Hi there, I'm Jo.
Located in Midwest US.
Me and the husband have been gardening for years, and he's an apiarist (bee keeper) but Spring 2016 found us helping a dear friend with 8 red sex links. We caught chicken fever from that experience, and bought a house recently that already had a chicken coop built in part of the garage. In early April we got three chicks. I was insistent we would have THREE for our first year, to see how things go... We now have seven (chicken math, eh?).. but I'm crazy attached to them all.
We decided we wanted a mix of breeds for a mix of eggs. Currently, we have:
pullets:
- easter egger - Norma
- dominique - Regina (such a lap chicken)
- black australorp - Nancy Botwin
- buff orpington - Peaches
straight runs (hoping for pullets)
- lavender orpington - Winnie
- blue laced red wyandotte - Red
- blue cochin (possible bantam, possible frizzle) - Waffle
They're all between 4 and 7 weeks right now. We built the run last weekend (still needs a door and roof) pulling ideas from a lot of coop- and run-build forum posts on BYC (so thanks for existing!) ... this weekend I'm hoping we'll put the finishing touches on Maison Poulailler and get the oldest ladies out of the house.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! I'm looking forward to spending even more time on BYC in the coming months as we learn! Y'all are full of information. It's appreciated.
