A miracle chick!!!

We ordered 8 eggs from a new breeder back in January. The were “in transit” per USPS for TWELVE DAYS!!! Went from OH, to NJ, to DC, to NC, and finally to VA. Not to mention during the polar vortex. We knew they’d never make it but tried it anyway. A couple quit within the 7 day period...we had 5 with zero signs of life on day 16. One....ONE had movement. Marans eggs mind you.

Poor thing...it’s air cell was zigzagged and way too large. But...we still put it on lockdown. We didn’t even get out the hatcher tray. We left it in the egg turner rack, sat it in the bottom...we didn’t even turn humidity up because we have 2 other staggered hatches taking place and it wasn’t worth the effort for one little egg that we just knew was never going to make it! All I did was plug a couple vent holes...so humidity stayed at 48% for the last 4 days.

I checked last night...no sign of life, but I left the egg and didn’t touch the incubator.

We came home from dinner tonight. I started sorting laundry. Husband was trying to replace his phone screen. Our 2 and 6 year olds start squealing at the incubator (housed in the kitchen of course). “MOMMY THERE’S A CHEEP!!! THERE’S A CHEEP!!!”

By George...there’s a cheep in there! A dang lucky little cheep that defied all odds to get here!

I’m just in shock right now.
Awwww ... God is good. An amazing little Cheep. Likely grow up to be President ... lol

I need to know the secret to sexing Marans. I’ve been questioning these two...pretty sure they’re Roos at 8 weeks. But they don’t have pointy saddle feathers (yet).
With most breeds larger and redder combs and wattles at about 6 wks tells the tale....its no secret.
Pointy hackle and saddle feathers won't show up until 3-4 months old.
