Good morning!
We have purchased our new coop and run, just have to set it up and then get our chickens. For our coop we are using pine shavings and we are looking at what is best for our run. Right now it is mostly dirt with a bit of grass, the only level place in the yard. Any suggestions of works best for the chickens? What does DE stand for? Thank you for your help.

You will find much information about run materials here, that is for certain. If you add your location to your profile, folks may be better suited to offer opinions as to what works in any given area.
DE stands for Diatomaceous Earth. Lots of differing opinions on that as well :)
Welcome to BYC — Tons of information and helpful folks at your fingertips!

Welcome!. I have a covered run (roof over part of it, raised chicken coop over the rest). I use chopped hay/straw in the run area. Just rake it around and it stays good. I, too, use wood chips inside the coop. I am just completing a larger run connected to my covered run. This will have wire on the top to protect from hawks, but no solid roof. I outlined it with wood, then filled in with fill sand so it would be level, as most of my yard is not level. I did the same with my covered run (there is a thick layer of fill sand under the hay/straw, and the girls love to dig in it).
DE is diatomaceous earth, often used in applications around chickens for insect control ( it dries out the exoskeleton of insects). It is added to sand for chicken dustbaths. Be sure to use food grade DE (yes, some people eat it!) for your chickens, and wear some protection-you don't want to breathe it in.

Hello and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. Please make yourself at home and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in the link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
