They are not sterile, they just don't lay eggs. Well except for the one I sold to a gal here on BYC, she bought it because she didn't want chicks then that hen laid eggs for her. She got the Golden Goose and didn't want it.

They're bred through splits and males. Spalding charcoal hens don't lay either.
