Hello everyone,
I have gone to the local auction and purchased 8 hens with a rooster. I absolutely love having chickens. any tips from anyone?
what can i grow that would be a healthy food choice for my chickens? do they need protein everyday?

Thanks Jessica

Hello and welcome to BYC. So, I'm new to chickens as well, but the crazy chicken lady I know...(yes, she calls herself that), said that she grows red worms under her rabbit hutch and has a soldier fly larvae grower. I think those must be maggots. She says she doesn't even have to buy feed anymore because they free range, eat the worms and maggots, and food scraps from leftover dinners. She does hang a cabbage head in the run every now and then.

Congratulations on the decision to keep chickens. It is a rewarding and educational experience.
Are you raising them for eggs? Meat? Pets?
They will eat just about anything including each other if neglected... I've always free ranged all of my birds. The will eat grass, bugs, gravel, and of course chicken feed. They are excellent insect control. Before I had chickens my yard was full of ticks, fleas, spiders, they will eat anything that moves. I also raise meal worms, BSF, and red worms.
Good luck on your endeavor.

They need to eat a balanced diet that has all they need to grow and lay. Your feed store will carry a good flock raiser or layer feed.

You might so some reading in our learning center here on BYC for some tips and hints on keeping your flock....
