A new chicken?

Quote:
Getting it young will get it use to you in the long run against getting it as a couple of week old an never handled and its harder for them to get use to human touch (although not impossible but thats why I never get chicks over 1 week old)
But Silkies will teach you patients when it comes to giving up their sex... I believe they hold their true sex until around 14-20 week (were other breed you can tell as soon as 3-4 weeks)

I Have Silkies They Dont Lay Well But They Love People And Mine Live With Standards I Have 3 Polish That They Live With And I Saw Them One Day All Curled Up Together Polish Are Lap Birds And Lay Decent Amounts!!

Hahaha! Polish are funky! They look like something out of Labyrinth XD <3

"Why you going around with a HEAD LIKE THAT?!" "You're only allowed to throw your own head!"

(Sorry caught in a moment) But at least that totally gave me some giggles!

Silkies are definitely the sweetest little things!!! I say get 2 because if you get one, you will surely want another one!

I can cuddle with my boys just as much as the girls. Some of my girls demand attention! They follow me around and run to me everywhere until I pick them up and hold them. I have to carry my girl Bianca around with me while I tend to the others!

I think silkies are great layers when they aren't broody!! I get 5-7 a week but the reason they say they aren't good layers because they tend to go broody.

Silkies are just so much fun!!!

I have 3, a red cockerel, a partridge pullet, and a black pullet (I think). The partridge is the sweetest and has been since she was a day old.

The red was sweet too until he started pecking more and more and the black has always been shy since she's at the bottom of the pecking order and half the size of the others. I think if I had really worked at it though and tried to get them to where they could be lap birds... all of them could have been as nice as my favorite (who is just sweet by nature)...
So, I would definitely suggest silkies for what you're looking for... They are not great layers, but make up for that in personality... plus the eggs you *do* get are just so cute from what I've seen! Anyway, as far as age goes... I would suggest one of two things.
You could get a few (at least two or three) babies (day-olds to week-olds) and then find some one to take any roos you get... I think it's pretty crucial to get them while they're still little..
OR
You could ask a breeder who you trust for one of their nicest pullets and only take her once they're sure she's a she. This way, a good breeder will have socialized the bird properly so even an older bird might be social enough to be a pet.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the Info

But yeah those used to scare me too.

I went and looked at some local silkies today but they were black (which is the only colour Id rather not have but will if it catches my heart) and the lady really wants them to go as a pair (male and female) and I really just want one. And Im thinking you are right about the babies part. If I get more than one it will be little hatchlings. Otherwise I think it might be ok if it comes from a home that handled it alot?

I just really think a Silkie is going to be the one. They are like Bunny chickens and I love it! They bring out the little girl from Despicable Me in me... "ITS SO FLUFFY!!!" Really love the white ones especially.

FYI: I TOTALLY LOVE THIS FORUM!
