that's something to really think hard about. maybe it's just from living too long in CA, but I find what they don't know can't be used to make a problem for me. if it's one shot, by the time my neighbors are outside trying to figure out where that came from, I'm all done, and there's no evidence it was me. not such a problem now that I'm in MO, and my neighbors are much further away, and rational, but still, it's something I have thought a lot about.
if your neighbors are from Boston, especially with young kids, I'd scope out their attitude about guns before I went telling them anything. if they're like me, they left the city to get to a more rational-about-guns environment, you'll be fine. however, if they're typical of Boston, telling them you might be/did shoot within range of their house will bring you a great deal of difficulty you probably don't want.

My CA experience tells me this: if you shoot a gopher in your garden, safely and not even in the direction of your neighbors, you WILL have a visit from the SWAT team, complete with 5 guys in flack jackets stalking you in your yard, helicopters and a trip to jail. because your neighbors may just call the cops and report that you're shooting AT THEM. and that they SAW you do it. it comes from the CA hysteria about guns, but if you've got bostonian neighbors you may have the same mind set.

You might be right. I don't know them very well. I have only been over there to warn them about the bear in the neighborhood. I don't know how they will react to my telling them I have a gun.

Better yet if nobody hears you.

Use air rifles, crossbows, or quiet .22 rounds.

The more powerful air rifles these days can take down coyotes and the more powerful crossbows can take down any North American game.

My favorite pest gun is a Savage 24 22/410 over under rifle/shotgun combo. that little gun never fails and has enough power to knock down any type of small game.

Congrats on the new gun. Everyone who owns chickens needs a gun and a TRAP. Predators seldom anounce their presence and they don`t show up when you are looking for them. Sneaky is their trademark. Your best use of your gun is to dispatch a trapped predator. Good luck and have fun........Pop

I have hot wire around one of my coops. I got this snake but snakes have gotten in & have eaten my fake eggs. Its been a bad year for snakes. I think I've gotten around 4 in the coop.I build all my coops now using half inch hardware cloth with an apron all the way around the coop & run. I couldn't believe it. But I found a snake the other day that had gotten his head stuck in the rafters & died.I have no idea how he got through the hardware cloth to get in. Its a big coop so maybe I just can't find the whole. Snakes can slither into almost anything. Hot wire is a good deterrent I've killed mice & no telling how many animals have been shocked. Me included.
