I've been working on the other thread as well. It DOES have ALOT of info. Great recipes. As I'm reading I entered them into the soapcalc and type in the instructs down in the notes so I would have it typed and ready for when I decide to make hat particular recipe.

Just tossing in my $0.02 since I just found these threads!

I bought 2 stick blenders for $10/peice from a local "off the wall" discount store. Over a year later and I'm still on blender #1.

I use a combination of loaf molds and silicone molds. I must say - silicone is quickly becoming my favorite. I don't gel; everything goes straight into the fridge since my soaps are all made with goat milk and I prefer that milky look.

I have 1 wooden log mold and have to line it with freezer paper. Talk about a PITA. I haven't yet figured out how to master a liner....

Ok. Help me clarify. Tell me if I wrong.
If you want to super fat you can #1 add extra something at trace ie the Shea butter or #2 put it Ito a calculator that you say 10% superfat and it automatically discounts the lye to result in the 10% superfatted at end of saponification or cure. Is this right? Are they basically the same result?

2nd question. If you add cocoa to a recipe you'll get color but how long will the scent stays in the soap. Thanks!!

A superfat % just means whatever % extra oils you have that will not react with the lye. Adding the extra oils at trace or all together is all the same. I personally much prefer to add it all at once just so I don't accidentally forget it. And you should always have all your oils in the lye calc. Some people just like to add them at trace because they think that it helps keep that oil from mixing as much with the lye. My experience is it does not matter when you add it.

You should ALWAYS have more oils that needed to fully saponify. The standard is 5%. I like 7 or 8%. A non superfatted soap is very harsh and can even be dangerous. It should only be used for stuff like laundry soap.

Ok, Does anyone have a recipe that they are willing to share that is a good mechanics type soap. Cleans really well, with maybe something gritty, yet at the same time doesn't dry out your hands? My husband does directional drilling and gets DIRTY (covered in diesel and dirt), but he also is telling me that his hands are so dry they are cracking.

Ideas?

He is coming home today...

So I will see the state of his hands. He did buy some Eucerin lotion, but it is soooo oily. Hopefully they are better.

BTW: I bought my scale! Only a few more things to buy, and then the ingredients!!!

Well, got all of my supplies locally except for the palm oil and buttermilk flakes. I wasn't able to find those, so I guess I'll have to order them online. Is there anything I can substitute for palm oil? I wish I'd ordered the palm oil earlier this week, but I thought I'd be able to find it. I found a drug store nearby that I've shopped many times, but forgotten about. There is a "Vitamins Plus" inside the drug store, and I found just about everything there I needed. They have about a zillion different essential oils. I couldn't believe it. About the only one I couldn't fine was Neroli, which I need for the Chamomile soap. Joy, if you're reading this, is there any other oil I can substitute for the Neroli in the Chamomile recipe? If not, I'll just have to wait till I can get it in to make the Chamomile.

Paula did you already have the Shea butter and Chamomille? I have not been able to find Palm Oil locally. I just bought a 50 lb pail from Columbus . I ordered a 7 lb castor oil too. I hate to run out of stuff I can't get quickly. You might try some sweet Orange EO . I don't know how it would work, but Neroli is Orange blossom. It is one of my favorite smells. Hope you have fun soaping.
