A new Year, A start to the rapid increase in the numbers of chickens on my property; it’s hatching season ya’ll.
First, I must confess, while I haven’t posted on BYC in forever, I haven’t been inactive. I’ve been a lurker
I come And keyword search “Modern” quite often to see if the “Modern Game Bantam” obsession needs preached to any who are considering bringing these little monsters home, and occasionally skimming posts, but never announcing my presence
Well I think it’s time to actually post again, as the amount of times the word “Modern” comes up from the search, NOT relating the the chicken (I never knew how much you could use the word and not refer to the leggy birds) lowers, I feel I must share my own birds to, per se, inspire the members of the community

So from the beginning friends. My chicken math currently equates to only 14 moderns, and 4 old English. I recently gave away 5 cockerels to a family member, and at a central state show, sold a whopping 32 young birds from 2019’s hatch, and all of my birchens, as a variety I was no longer interested in continuing. I cut down numbers, onlllyyy to spike them back up in a few months time...using my fancy dancy 200 egg incubator
So my current varieties include Lemon Blues, Lemon Blues, and more Lemon Blues
. No, While Lemons blues are my main focus, I kinda need Brown Reds in order to make that happen, so I currently have both Varieties in Modern Games and Old English bantams. Plus one odd ball Silver Blue I raised 3 years ago and refuse to get rid of, she’s my baby!!!
I’ve also hung, for the first time, an egg production light in the garage, so maybe I can get birds soon enough that they’ll be ready to show this summer (unfortunate reminder of this past year...and having birds with CHICK FUZZ when show time rolled around
). But I’ve only gotten eggs from a brown red OEG, and nada from my moderns. (At this point of arms are cramping from laying in bed in the most uncomfortable position in order to type, but keep my phone plugged into the charger
but just a look into my thoughts, of the very tempting idea to either give up on this, or come back in a few days if I don’t forget...)
I currently have no Modern Mammas (What I Call my Cochin/Wyandotte bantams that hatch and raise some chicks),after my previous momma disappeared this autumn, so I’m hoping to run across one in some spout of luck soon.
Well I can’t really think of much more info, so here’s some pictures to help inspire you to welcome some of these wondrous dinosaurs into your flock
(OOH OOH OOH!! I GOT A SHIRT WITH THEM ON IT!!
)
