Hi to all you chicken folks! This raising backyard chickens is all new to us! This website is not new, as I did a lot of research here before we decided to take the plunge. The day after Easter we made the little purchase of 9 chicks, with 6 different breeds: 2 RIR's, 2 Ameraucana's, 2 Silky Wyandottes, and 1 each of Buff Orpington, Black Barred Rock, and a White Barred Rock at our local Runnings store. Then the big scare came out in the state with the Asian Bird Flu in turkey's and chickens??? But our hens are doing great and we are having fun watching the girls grow, peck, run/waddle, roost and being snoopy! Some of our grandchildren are enjoying them more than others and they have named most of the hens also! So far, there have been no eggs laid, but hopefully it's not to far off in the future!?! :)

That sounds like an amazing flock, and it sounds like you take excellent care of them.

They should start laying from 16-25 weeks of age.

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! I'm glad you're enjoying them! Like @GitaBooks said, they should begin laying eggs anywhere from 18-30 weeks. Sometimes earlier and sometimes later.
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Most chickens start laying from 20-25 weeks; some a little earlier, a few a little later. Sounds like you are having fun with your new flock. Nice to have the grandkids involved with them, kids can learn a lot having animals around.

August 12th was an exciting day, as the first egg was laid by one of our hens! They sure start out small, but have had a few large laid
Since then.
Is it ok to feed the hens fresh oats from the field and how much should you give them?
I would like to keep the chickens as organic as I can, but wondering if Nutrena Nature Wise laying feed is ok?
They sure seem to love the scraps from the kitchen, such as watermelon rinds, tomato, bread crusts, cucumbers and zuccini.

Fresh grain, fruit, vegetables, grass, seeds, and insects are great for chickens! These will provide all the vitamins they need in most cases, but a calcium supplement (such as oyster shell) and make sure they get protein. Other then these, that diet should be good!
