Ode to the Chicken
A more useful creature you never shall see;
Eggs, meat, and companionship, all provided for free.
They're quirky and cute and affectionate, too,
So of course we all love our chicks, hens and roos.
Let's start with the chick, covered in down,
Near one you'll find it hard to frown.
They start out so tiny, as small as a mouse,
But soon they're too big to stay in your house!
The laying hen has a beak, comb and waddle,
And lays many eggs to fry, boil and coddle.
She loves to free-range, searching for food,
And is super-devoted when raising her brood.
We all love the rooster, struttin' his stuff,
He's big and mean and really tough.
An essential part of any chicken farm,
He protects his girls from all worldly harm.
The pecking order determines who's in charge.
It ranks every chicken, small and large.
The girl at the top rules the yard,
The ones at the bottom get pecked kinda hard.
Here's the point I'm trying to make:
Chickens are even better than cake!
They're the all-purpose creature that always brings a smile;
Raising them is surely worth your while.
