I tucked a little poult under my broody silky when her chicks hatched, and she's delighted with her gawky, nerdly child (although the roo seems suspicious that this might not be his child
). I've been giving them chick feeder, and she spends most of the day free-ranging them. I was a little less worried about the protein content of the feed because of the free-ranging, but yesterday I saw his hatchmates and they are huge in comparison. So now I'm wondering how I can get him to eat more protein. I got some turkey starter (28% protein) and put it down for everyone, but she'll take them out in the yard soon. I do try to pour a little food out near them when the rest of the flock isn't around, but they only snack a bit and leave the rest.
Any ideas how I can feed my poor, undernourished little poult better?
