My friend has informed me that a spot close to us has feral peacocks that have taken up residence and just continue to breed and multiply. Apparently they are extras that have escaped from someone that used to own a bunch outside of town. They are currently residing in a gravel pit kind of area with no houses and don;t belong to anyone.

Ethically...... would it be ok to gather some eggs from them???? What do you all think?

I would gather as many eggs as would fit in my bator. Then I would gather some more and buy another bator. LOL

Since I was the first to answer you my office fee is 1 doz eggs.

Heck yes! I sure wish we had a colony of feral peacocks to gather eggs from! Can you post some pics if you get them?

I will definitely be looking into this then..... is there a "season" for peacocks? If I do get some eggs, I will be looking to relocate them as I do not have a bator or a brrody hen

I am going to investigate this further, and if all works out and I end up with eggs, I will post here on this thread. So stay tuned.... hopefully my friend knows what she is talking about!

LOL, seriously, my husband would kill me if I told him I was driving to Michigan for feral peacock eggs.

If you do have any to ship, put me on that list.

Is there a thread on here that explains how to gather, keep and ship eggs? How long can I have them before I ship them??? How do I store them before shipping if I need to store them for a day or two. Any tips on packaging for shipping??? What do I write on the box.... will the post office give me guff for shipping eggs??? Do I tell them they're eggs?? New to this whole part of it.

I would be glad to take some off your hands, too!

I would not plan on holding them too long. Since you don't know when they were laid, you don't know how old they are. They should be stored around 55 - 65 degrees, I think that is right. I always store my eggs in my basement. The fridge is too cold.

Wrapping eggs for shipping can be a lot of work. Most people say that wrapping in bubble wrap and then filling the box with cushioning material is best. I have also seen people use pine shavings with good results, though if you don't use a flat rate box shavings are heavy.

You must declare that they are perishable and fragile. I ask that people don't put hatching eggs on my boxes because they usually destroy those boxes. Insurance gets the best handling!

Here are two places that show packaging of eggs:

And yes, peacocks only lay eggs for a few weeks in late spring. They are seasonal layers, so you have to get them while the getting is good!

DeAnna
