Another one of my dumb suggestions: If you can only get the pellets, could you not run them through a food processor? I do that with the parrot pellets and feed the crumbled parrot pellets to my parakeets. I would think you could make your own crumbles that way. It would be a bit messy, I bet, though. I have also done that with puppy food for really young pups (I have a food processor just for the critters, maybe I am getting carried away. hmmmm....)
