I wasn't sure where to post this, but thought this thread would be seen a little more than the BuySellTrade one...

Along the way I read something about the problem of liabilities when selling your eggs as a small scale producer. That one would need insurance in case someone ever got sick eating an egg you sold, and that the cost of insurance would obliterate any profit a backyard chicken keeper would make.

How do all of you handle this?

We have been selling eggs for 5 years or more
and have not heard about insurance for this.
If you make sure that the eggs are washed well
and kept at the proper temp you should not have any poblems. If you are unsure about the quaility
of your eggs pitch them or give them to your other
livestock such as pigs. One way to check is to put the eggs is to cover them completely with water if they lay side to side they should be okay. If they stand straight up and down get rid of them they are bad.

I am not saying that this is set in stone but this has worked for us and we so far have not had any problems. Knock on wood!!!!!!!

How much do you sell your eggs for, if you don't mind me asking? We sell ours for $2.00 and thinking of raising them to $2.50 since feed is rising in our area again.

We don't sell are eggs but give to family and friends. We don't wash or refrigerate our eggs. Our eggs are very clean and we leave the protective layer on the shell. We keep them in a cool shaded area, we haven't experience any problems.

We wash and clean then refridgerate. We have not had any problems that I know of. We sell at a major hospital and no it is not UNC and the USPS for a " donation" for a feed costs. I have a refidgerator in my office as does my DH so we are good to go on that issue. My Dh is mean. He'll give the 1st dz to them and get them hooked on fresh brown eggs and then they are coming back for more asking how much?

Mine haven't started to lay yet, but I'm considering options for when they do. The grocery store sells 'free run' eggs for $4 a doz. I've seen free range eggs at farm markets for $2.75 but this is in Atlantic Canada.
