Hello to all,
I've been lurking here since my wife came home one day last April and asked if I wanted to try raising a few chicks.
Sure, why not was my response and then I started doing some research and found this site. Just about the time I was ready to give up on the idea because of the initial/daily work involved with raising laying hens, my wifes friend (who has over a hundred hens) said our order was to arrive in a few days from McMurray Hatchery.
So I had to scramble to set up the brooder in the basement and then begin work on the outside structure.
Well, thanks to this site and many, many posters of which I borrowed coop / run ideas from, I managed to build something with my limited carpentry skills. (Thanks Dad)
We wanted brown eggs layers which were suited to the weather here in Wisconsin. We chose to limit ourselves to only ten chicks and ended up with (4) Golden Laced Wyandotte's and (6) Dark Brahmas.
After 24 weeks of waiting and wondering we finally have something to show for our time and effort.
I will post pics of our first eggs today in the "First Eggs" sticky.
I will try to post pics of our coop soon.
Thanks again to all BYC'ers
