Been browsing for a few days now, and decided it was time to sign up. My son (27) decided that he wanted to raise some chickens and went to our local TSC and bought the remainder of their EE's. They had 10 left and TSC let him have them for $2.50 for all ten chicks. So I guess we are officially in the backyard chicken business! The salesman said they would get more in the next week, and was hoping to get another breed or two. But, they didn't get any more and so for now, we are a total EE flock. They are now about 8 weeks old and still trying to figure out how many are roos and how many pullets. Don't have any trying to crow yet, so I guess it's a wait and see game for now. Both my son and I are new to raising chickens, though my step-grandfather raised chickens when I was little. He loved his fancy birds.

We inquired about scrap pallets to use to make a coop out of, and they showed us some of the metal crates that their mowers come shipped in. We loaded up a few tops and bottoms and came home and welded them up for our frame. Ended up with a 6' 7" x 11' x 7' tall coop. We had a bunch of lumber out in the yard from a wood working business we use to own a few years back and my son used that to cover the outside of the coop. Had to purchase some lumber and OSB sheets for the floor and roofing materials. Total materials was less than $175. The fencing is where the cost come in. With a lot of predators around our area, I think free ranging is out of the question. The coop is mostly complete, we still have to put on doors, final boards around top to cover screen, and put up the fencing.

What a deal on the EEs hope they aren't all boys. If you have some photos of them you can post here or at "what breed or gender is this.," to find out what you've got

Welcome to Backyard chickens.
