I do not usually free range my chickens, I used to when I had a very small flock, Sally my NH red thought it was her job to go visit all the neighbors yards, but lucky for me she would come when I clapped. and my neighbors didn't mind.
However though we live in a rural area, and our street isn't a through street people seem to think it's OK to fly down the road.

I have a very large pen, but today Lizzy B my barred rock got out, and they usually don't go anywhere when that happens, just hang around the outside of the pen.

Today I was like heck with it, and opened the door and let them all out. (I stayed with them of course) and they were all confused at first lol

but we had a good couple hours.
Zeus my Brahma stayed pretty much by my side, maybe wander about 5 feet away lol

This is Lizzy B and Gracie, where you see one you can usually find the other. (I usually raise my chicks in 2s) if you can't tell a Barred rock and Dark Brahma

My polish frizzle Floyd, always a gentleman, Mazie my golden laced Wyandotte, Zeus my light Brahma, Sally my NH red and my very first chicken ever and Daphne my little polish gal
autumn2.jpg

Most of the gang, my three silkies are off doing their own thing, and my son
autumn3.jpg

And speaking of Silkies this is Pablo, and Picasso for some reason rather stay in the coop but he did pop out now and then
autumn4.jpg

This is my little Mozart, He gets picked on by everyone and usually stays by himself, well this warmed my heart because he got be out and enjoy himself and be more part of the flock. I cut his poof over the summer so he could see better, as he has a big ole poof and beard,

autumn5.jpg

My majestic Floyd, he is actually the Top Cockerel (I have 5) He is such a gentleman to me and the ladies. Though he just started mating with poor Daphne and after its done she looks around like what the heck just happen? lol
autumn6.jpg

Daphne and Floyd, they would make some great looking babies.. She is a snuggle bug I love cuddling this chick. her and Mozart my silkie are the best snugglers.
autumn7.jpg

My pretty Daphne, she doesn't know how lighting and taking pics work LOL, I have also cut her hair so she could see or she would be a big fluff with just a beak poking out
autumn8.jpg

and last but not least, my Sally, my very first chicken she is 4 years old and I have incubated her first baby and that little one is upstairs being funny actually.. Zeus is her dad

autumn9.jpg

So more supervised free range, I won't do it unsupervised I don't want them hit by a car, and can you image Zeus my Lt Brahma coming up to you if you weren't familiar with chickens you would think a dinosaur came back from extinction, and he is only 6 months old
(The kids jog down our road from the school every day)

All my chickens had a wonderful time, no bossing each other and I am hoping to get rid of the over growth back there by letting them go and do their thing

thanks for looking

I do the supervised free range for about an hour every day and it really calms them down. Just that little bit gives them a better quality of life without getting eaten.

I agree, it seemed to do them a world of good. I feel bad often that they don't get to free range. so it was awesome to see them enjoying themselves
and they stayed by me mostly. Lizzie B and Gracie however are their own little Clique. I think they think they are better than the rest of us LOL

Just a tip: I keep a small bag of breadcrumbs in my pocket in case someone is stubborn about coming back into the run. Today one of them was poking around and grabbing the bag out of my pocket. LOL! They are wicked smart to so don’t let your guard done.
