Hello all!
I'm not new to the site, however it has been a LONG time since I've been on... my, how the site has expanded!!!
My name is Kelly, I live in Capac, Michigan. I have been raising chickens for about 3 years now and found the most valuable information from this message board! I have about 30 birds right now, I'm very fond of "mixing things up" so I always try to maintain a good variety of breeds in the coop. I think right now I have buff orpingtons, buff rocks, white rocks, isa browns, silver spangled hamburgs, cuckoo marans, ee, and there's a couple others, I just can't remember the breed names at the moment!
My husband and I have decided not to purchase more chickens this year, though there is usually a poultry swap meet in Imlay City in April each year, so I'm sure I'll pick some up there anyways. And who knows, I may pick some up at Tractor Supply as well... or if I see any good ads on Craigs List... I think this year we just didn't want to deal with having to order a minimum number of birds. And our plan is to take some eggs from our coop and pop them into the incubator...
We will definitely be picking up some turkey poults at the swap meet as well. I ordered some from McMurry last year, but the minimum order number is 15, and I really don't want to raise 15 turkeys again - I think we want to only get 4-6 this year.
We also raise pigs every summer, so I am looking forward to our annual pig purchase next month!
This past Christmas, my husband finally jumped on the goat bandwagon. I'm so excited! The goats are still a few years away, I think. We will need to build a new barn for them, and run water/electrical as well. While I would be content just building a new goat barn, my husband is having thoughts of building a larger building that can house all of our animals and also provide additional storage space. We'll see...
Just thought I'd reintroduce myself... Hopefully my visits to the site will be more frequent...
